2011
Assignment #1
Project Topic Selection
1) All images and quotes must be used to support the sub-section position which is linked to the thesis and story-line (think of them as the concrete details of your project). If you have an image (either documentary or exhibit) that is there just to have an image, you will most-likely have to remove or replace it.
2) Text must be in paragraph form (oral in documentaries, written in exhibits). Bulleted or listed information does not lend itself to narrative explanation, nor does it exhibit analysis. If you have your text in this format, you will most-likely have to edit it.
3) Text must be carefully crafted to get to the point quickly and effectively. This is the “commentary” of an essay that works to shape and give meaning to the “concrete detail” quotes and images. Remember you have a lot to say and only 500 words (in an exhibit) and 10 minutes (in a documentary). Concise wording is a skill we will be working on. Be ready to reword your text often. Try to keep your textboxes to 3-5 sentences in maximum.
**In early drafts, it is ok to have more than 500 words–or to be longer than 10 minutes– and to have longer text boxes–or wordy sections in your documentary, but remember that you will have editing to do as you move forward**

IT IS EXPECTED THAT YOU WILL REDIRECT YOUR EFFORTS IN THE DIRECTIONS THAT ARE IN THE COMMENTS ON NOODLETOOLS. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE THAT THESE THINGS NEED TO BE ADDRESSED OR CHANGED YOU MUST DISCUSS THIS WITH YOUR TEACHER!
Assignment #1 of the Primary Research Section has been moved!
Use Inspiration to create a detailed Timeline of the specific story your project will focus on.
This should ignore the larger contextual dynamics and put the thesis and theme in the background. Just tell the story through a Inspiration Timeline.
The new Due Date is: Friday 1/7/11
Interlibrary Loan
Post the resource you are ordering through inter-library loan. You are rquired to order a minimum of one resource, but are encouraged to order more that will help you with your project.
Remember that if you are researching a topic that is located in Powell, odds are that their library will have more resources on this that will help you. Think where your story is focused, the library there will probably have more to offer than we do here in Jackson.
If you cannot afford the $2 interlibrary fee, please see Mrs. Lori for funding help. As this is a required assignment the school can help with costs if necessary.
The new Due Date is: Friday 1/7/11
**Don’t forget Interview Information is also required Friday 1/7/11**
**See “Research Tab” for all assignments due in this stage of research**
1. All students need to ILL (InterLibrary Loan) at least one resource. Bring the item or the title of it to class on Monday, January 3rd.
2. In Noodletools, cite the magazine database article. Many of you did this in class on Wednesday. We will check in your Noodletools account to correct it. If you deleted it before we corrected it, you will need to redo the citation in Noodletools.
3. To find the article: Go to WYLD > EBSCO > EBSCOhost > Masterfile Premier and History Reference Center. Search homesteading AND Wyoming. Select FULL-TEXT.
The article Homesteaders, 1954 is the magazine article that needs to be cited.

Please see Mr. Brazil to set up a conference time before or after school, or during lunch. The purpose of these meetings is to:
a) Discuss Thesis and Theme Development
b) Discuss Context, Story, and Significance Expectations
c) Discuss Research and Note-Taking Strategies
d) Discuss Possible Project Ideas
We’ll spend some time today with the reference staff at the Teton County Library. This is a great time to ask questions as they help you find pertinent print sources for your project. Be sure to check out the Western Americana room where many regional historical books are found.
Most books can be checked out for three weeks with one renewal. Be sure to keep close track of these books. You are responsible for their care and getting them back on time.
We’ll stop by Betty Rock on the way back to school to get some lunch.
